Welcome to the website for the Department of Biochemistry, Nutrition and Health Promotion at Mississippi State University.

The Department offers three undergraduate degrees in Biochemistry; Culinology; and Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion with 16 different concentrations in which students may choose. Graduate degrees are available in Agricultural Life Sciences; Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion; Functional Food, Nutrition and Health Promotion; Life Sciences; Molecular Biology; and Public Health.

Biochemistry is the branch of science concerned with the chemical and physiochemical processes that occur within living organisms. Nutrition and health promotion extend the continuum from the processing of food to its marketing, consumption, and impact on public health and community.


Mission

The mission of the Department of Biochemistry, Nutrition and Health Promotion is to advance knowledge and understanding of these disciplines for the betterment of student and clientele educational pursuits, and to contribute to the improved well-being and prosperity of communities, local and global, through teaching, research and outreach efforts within this interdisciplinary department.

History

Location

Mississippi State University is physically located adjacent to the city of Starkville, Mississippi in the northeastern section of Mississippi.

Our beautiful award-winning campus is home to over 20,000 students and is 23 miles west of Columbus and 125 miles northeast of the capital city of Jackson. With a Carnegie Classification of Doctoral University with Very High Research Activity, Mississippi State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Department of Biochemistry, Nutrition and Health Promotion is located in two campus locations. Biochemistry is located in Dorman Hall. Nutrition and Health Promotion is located in the Herzer Building.
